Youth Summer Reading

Early Literacy (Ages 0 – 2): Each parent/child can complete up to 3 monthly early learning activity sheets. There is no time requirement (i.e. monthly). The activity sheets have 30 early literacy skill building activities. Parents are asked to complete at least 20 activities to get a prize. Those who complete all 3 activity sheets get a grand prize.

Read to Me (Ages 3 – 5): Each child receives a reading log in a booklet format. For every 10 books that are read to them, they earn a prize. The grand prize goal for these children is to have 50 books read to them.

Primary (Grades k – 3) and Intermediate (Grades k – 4): Each child receives a reading log for 30 books. These programs are based on a point system. Every 100 pages earns the child 1 point. For every 5 points that the child earns, they get a prize. Once the child earns 30 points, they get their grand prize. They must read at least two fiction books, two non-fiction books, one biography, and one award book.

As an incentive for attending programs, children will receive Program Punch Cards when they attend their first program of the summer. Cards will be “punched,” or stamped, for each program they attend. Once they attend a certain amount of programs, they will be entered to win a family activity basket at the end of Summer Reading.

All books must be library books, but books can be read here in the library if the child does not have a card. We encourage children to read at their appropriate level.

Programming: Youth Services offers programs each weekday through mid-August. See the Youth Services page for program dates, times, and details.

Teen Summer Reading

Teen Summer Reading is for teens in 7th-12th grades. If you’re going into 7th, you can choose either the Intermediate or Teen program. You can read any book (which includes audio books and graphic novels) at your reading level. You MUST have a valid library card. Books must be checked out from the Hammond Public Library.

Bring your reading log with you every time you return a book to the Information Services Desk on the 2nd floor. When you finish a reading log, you will be asked to write a few sentences about one of the books you read, you will get a small prize, and you will be entered into the drawing for a $125 Best Buy gift card. You can complete up to 12 reading logs. Don’t forget to come to Teen programs—each time you attend a program, you get an extra entry into the drawing!

Teen Scene summer hours: From Mon., June 9 through Sat., Aug. 9, Teen Scene is open during library hours.

Teen programs take place on most Wednesdays. Attending programs earns you an extra entry into the drawing.

More info: (219) 931-5100, Ext. 351.

Adult Summer Reading

Books and audiobooks for Summer Reading must be checked out from the Hammond Public Library, and read or listened to between June 2 and August 30. To participate, you must be 18 years of age or older, and have a valid Hammond Public Library card. When you sign up, you’ll receive your Literary Elements reading log.

Read or listen to 7 books of your choice to complete a log. Write the titles of the books on the lines on the back of the log. Library staff will stamp and date all entries. Bring your log with you each time you return books. If you are reading an e-book, please see a librarian at Information Services before the book is returned on your device.

For every log you complete, you are entered into a prize drawing. You may complete as many logs as you wish, up to 12 logs. The more logs you complete, the better your chances of winning.

Mini-drawings are held on these Fridays: June 13 & 27; July 11 & 25; Aug. 8. The Grand Prize drawing takes place after the program ends Aug. 30. Literary Elements logs must be turned in no later than 4 p.m. on Sat., Aug. 30. The Grand Prize winner will be announced by Fri., Sept. 6.
